Miss Julie's School of Beauty is a therapeutic cosmetology school that bridges the gap between rescue and rehabilitation services

and independent living.

We believe that survivors of human trafficking deserve a chance to rebuild their lives and achieve their full potential. Our program offers high-quality cosmetology education in a restorative setting, providing them with the skills and confidence they need to succeed.

julie chapus, lmsw & executive director

Julie Chapus is a visionary leader who has combined her expertise in social work and cosmetology to create a groundbreaking program that empowers survivors of human trafficking. Her passion for helping others is evident in her dedication to providing survivors with the tools they need to rebuild their lives and achieve their full potential. Through her training programs, Julie is raising awareness about human trafficking and equipping professionals with the knowledge and skills to identify and support survivors.

Jordan betts, program director

Jordan's experience as a cosmetologist, entrepreneur, educator, and community advocate has equipped her with the skills and knowledge to support survivors and build a strong community. Her passion for empowering women in business is evident in her work with Rochester's Bossy and her efforts to inspire entrepreneurs and management professionals.

Chantel's lived experience as a survivor and her expertise in survivor-led initiatives make her a valuable resource for our school. Her insights have been instrumental in shaping the strategies we use in our school model.

Mandy's expertise in social work and psychotherapy allows her to provide essential mental health support to our students.  Her use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Integrative/Holistic Psychotherapy ensures that our students receive the most effective treatment.​

Why Cosmetology?
 

  • State-Issued Licenses: Cosmetology licenses in New York State are granted after background checks, offering a stable career path free from potential re-traumatization during the application process.  

  • Pre-Enrollment Advocacy: MJSB staff can assist students with any legal hurdles surrounding past records, ensuring a smooth licensing process.

  • Accessible Training: We welcome students as young as 16.5 with a high school diploma or GED, reaching a vulnerable population often targeted by human trafficking.

  • Diverse Career Options: Cosmetology offers a well-paying trade with diverse opportunities beyond salon work, including product sales, development, or even becoming an instructor.
     

Why Rochester?
 

  • Filling the Gap: Rochester has established rescue and rehabilitation programs, but survivors need support during reintegration. MJSB focuses on this critical post-rehabilitation stage.

  • Serving a National Need: We welcome applicants nationwide due to our unique program offering state-issued licenses. This fills a national gap for survivors seeking safe communities and career paths.
     

Why a New School?
 

  • Trauma-Informed Approach: MJSB creates a safe haven for survivors with a supportive therapeutic environment that addresses their unique needs.  

  • Reduced Re-Entry Rate: We aim to break the cycle of re-entry into the sex industry by providing job skills, safe employment partnerships, and ongoing support.

  • Flexibility for Healing: Unlike traditional programs, we offer flexible scheduling to accommodate students' recovery journeys. We can pick up on completed hours and work with partnering agencies to ensure uninterrupted progress.
